We have heard of the information highway, & the world Wide Web (WWW).
Internet is a worldwide virtual network of digital information. We generally Log in to the internet by dialing a certain number provided by our Internet Service Provider (ISP) (for example VSNL). The other way of entering this information highway is by some broad band connection provided by another Service provider ( for example Dishnet DSL) So these ISPs give us the necessary entry point to access the internet using our personal computer. Once we are connected to the internet, the virtual world on WWW opens in front of us. The software we use to brows through the www is called the internet browsers. (The most famous browsers are Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator,) These softwares know the language of the internet & communicates with the internet. The information on the internet is brought to the users using a programming language called HTML. To identify the address on the internet, a user friendly system has been incorporated which uses domain names. A Domain Name is a Unique path of a web site which generally points to some physical space on the hard disk of servers. Servers are the computers which are logged on to the internet on a 24 hours x 365 days basis.
http://www.yahoo.com is an example of one such popular domain or a web site. As you type this address in the address bar of the browser window & press enter on your key board, the browser sends a query to this particular web site & retrieves a web page which is a front end of the vast information that is hidden behind the screen on to your computer. By clicking on to the Links provided, one could brows through the web site & see what information offered on that web site. |
